The Internet is Choking on Streaming Video. The unicast Internet was NOT designed for the efficient transport of video. Approximately 73% of peak Internet traffic is now Over-The-Top (OTT) video streaming. OTT consumption is growing at greater than 110% per year. (Cisco 2019 report) Operators are enhancing Network capacity from 3G to 4G to 5G where as very less is being done to remove Network congestion. A simple analogy that follows would be like a 3000 CC Lamborghini cannot move an inch in a bumper to bumper traffic jam even with the most powerful engine whereas any weak power car can move with full speed in an empty highway. OTT video is the major motivation for internet access and the unicast internet was not designed to cater millions of download for Video files which is choking the internet not. It is high time for a major re-design. The continued growth of OTT consumption is creating overwhelming congestion in the majority of ISP access networks. Mobile video traffic accounted for 59% of all mobile data traffic in 2017 (Source: Cisco). OTT content distribution expenses will continue to rise with growing volume for both distributors and consumers. Increased ISP based video consumption is growing at greater than 115% per year degrading both OTT service quality and traditional Internet services. The Wireline and Mobile Internet both are struggling to meet this rapidly increasing demand.
